Stars is an annual recognition and celebration for career education programs, also known as career technical education, whose students show significant gains in factors important for advancing social mobility represented by:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">An increase in earnings by 50% or more<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Attainment of the regional living wage by 70% or more<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">90% or more were employed in a job similar to their field of study<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Strong Workforce Stars is an output of the\u00a0Strong Workforce Program, an annual recurring investment of $200 million to spur career education in California Community Colleges (see\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/losmedanos.mycareerfocus.org\/fall-2019-volume-11-issue-1\/edit\/?id=66\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Strong Workforce Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">2018 LMC Strong Workforce Stars<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">A number of LMC\u2019s career education programs were recognized as 2018 Strong Workforce Stars for their programmatic achievements: <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" living wage and 100% of students are employed in a job similar to their field of study<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\"><img increase in earnings<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 51px;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">Automotive Technology: <\/span>109% increase in earnings<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 51px;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">Computer Networking: <\/span>100% of students are employed in a job similar to their field of study<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 51px;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\"><b>Administration of Justice: <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">130% increase in earnings<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 51px;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\"><b>Fire Technology: <\/b><\/span>120% increase in earnings<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">In addition to themes in the types of programs that generate strong levels of economic mobility \u2013 such as health care, manufacturing, and public service \u2013 six program characteristics emerged that are hallmarks of effective, evidence-based practices. Strong Workforce Stars are generally:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">Industry Driven:<\/span> Programs use a range of strategies that expand their relationships with employers designed to build trust, understand occupational expectations and trends, and position themselves as a go-to source for future employees.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\"><b><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">Career Directed:<\/span> <\/b>Top programs reinforce paths to employment through the integration of real-world experiences such as hands-on simulations, project-based learning, field experiences and internships.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\"><b>Faculty Led:<\/b> <\/span>Career education faculty contribute to students\u2019 employment outcomes by working in the industry while teaching, staying connected through sector-based associations, and\/or participating in professional networks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\"><b><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">Student Centered:<\/span> <\/b>Effective programs respond to the priorities, experiences, and needs of the students through career counseling, educational planning, progress monitoring, tutoring, and one-on-one faculty intervention when a student is falling behind.<span programs continuously use data and evidence to direct the development and delivery of their offerings, often by soliciting information from students and employers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\"><b><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">Intersegmentally Engaged:<\/span> <\/b>Strong Workforce Stars often jump start high school students on a path to
